If you feel comfortable with driving on the left and backing up on the barge you can also pick up a rental car at the airport on St. Thomas, and to drive to the car ferry ("the barge") in Red Hook. Not all rental companies allow their cars to go to St John. The Budget Car rental does, and is located at the airport.

Dependable Car Rental will allow their cars to go to St John also, but do not provide service of vehicles on St John if it were to break down. They are 3 minutes from the airport, and offer shuttle to and from.

Car Ferry - Barge Information


Round trip with car is around $50, including passengers. There are three different companies with ferries, all leaving from the same location, with different schedules. One runs every half hour from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm from Red Hook. The car ferry runs daily, 7 days a week. Weekends skip the first morning run each way.
The last ferry time to St John 6 pm so you want to make sure you have plenty of time to wait for your luggage, get your car and make the barge. Please note times and prices can change.

Red Hook Ferry
(One-way, $7/Adults and $2/Children ages 2-11 & $2 per luggage item)
First boats leave Cruz Bay at 6:00 & 7:00 AM
First boats leave Red Hook at 6:30 & 7:30 AM
After that boats leave every hour on the hour both ways.
Last boat leaves Cruz Bay at 11:00 PM
Last boat leaves Red Hook at midnight

Leaving Red Hook, St. Thomas Note: July - November 2008: No 8pm and 10pm ferry
Leaving Cruz Bay, St. John Note: July - November 2008: No 7pm and 9pm ferry

Charlotte Amalie Ferry
There have been problems with the downtown ferries not running or being on time so do not count on them if you are in a hurry or on your way to the airport. The Red Hook Ferry would be the way to go if you are.

You buy your ticket for the ferry and for you large luggage items at the ferry booth in Red Hook or Cruz Bay. The Charlotte Amalie Ferry booth is on the waterfront in St Thomas
